THIS CHRISTMAS GIVE THE CHILDREN OF COLOMBIA THE GIFT OF A LIFETIME, THE CHANCE OF A BRIGHTER FUTURE
We believe that education has the power to transform lives. That's why this Christmas we are asking for donations towards our work in improving accessibility and quality of education for children in Colombia.
My name is Daniela , I’m 13 years old and I live in La Guajira, a desert in the North of Colombia with my father and sisters. I love spending Christmas with my family, playing games, eating food and opening presents. This has been a good year because I have had the opportunity to learn more about my favourite subjects, like English and science. Education is very important to me because I want to be a doctor when I grow up!
The Colombian education sector faces increasingly complex challenges, such as high dropout rates, children frequently falling behind in class, and a lack of quality teaching. Of most concern, figures show that 54% of students in Colombia are receiving minimum or insufficient levels of education quality.
Daniela is part of the Wayuu indigenous community in La Guajira where only 20% of students finish secondary school and only 5% attend university.
What is Children Change Colombia doing?
We work in rural areas with children of ethnic minorities to improve access to and quality of education.
One of the ways we do this is through the provision of tablets and the O-Lab App, which enables children to access engaging educational resources on many subjects in their local languages from wherever they are.
Leyder, from the indigenous community, Poromana, said of the O-Lab app:
“I've learned how to read, and thanks to the training from home I've learned a lot, I feel very happy for all the support I have received. Thanks to this wonderful mobile app I've learned a lot of things such as entrepreneurship. I am getting more knowledge and it feels great learning every day.”
